Hey community members! I’m about to book a trip I’ve been dreaming of for years, and the topic of travel insurance keeps popping up. It adds a noticeable cost, and I’m wondering if it’s truly worth the investment for peace of mind. Have you ever been in a situation where travel insurance was a lifesaver? Or maybe you bought it and never needed it? I’d love to hear your real-life experiences – the good, the bad, and the “it could have been so much worse if I didn’t have it” stories!

I always get travel insurance, especially for international trips, and it paid off big time when I had a medical emergency in Asia. I ended up in the hospital, and my insurance reimbursed all my expenses, which would have easily been several thousand dollars out of pocket.

For my surfing trip to Indonesia, I unfortunately had to cancel last minute due to a family emergency. Luckily, my wife convinced me to get “cancel for any reason” coverage, which cost me about $350. Even though it took some time, I eventually received $3,000 back on my $4,000 trip cost, which I was very grateful for.

I’ve been using World Nomads for over a decade because I love trying adventurous activities abroad. Their “Explorer” plan covers over 200 risky sports. Once, my DSLR camera got stolen in Paris, and their baggage and personal effects benefit gave me a payout, up to $1,500 per item.

I travel frequently to Europe, and while I used to rely on the travel insurance benefits of my credit card, I realized it wasn’t as robust as a dedicated travel insurance policy. The credit card coverage was better than nothing, but when I looked closely, the travel accident insurance only covered accidental death or dismemberment. For comprehensive coverage, a separate policy seems necessary for my peace of mind.
