Hey everyone, I just lost my job and really need to get legal car insurance ASAP in Iowa so I can start driving to look for new work. I’m 22, have a learner’s permit with no driving history, and will be driving a high-mileage 2002 Buick. My budget is incredibly tight, and I’m only looking for the absolute bare minimum coverage to legally drive while learning with a licensed person. Does anyone know the cheapest companies or any secrets to getting the lowest possible rate?

I’ve found that the absolute cheapest options are often smaller, regional insurers that don’t spend a ton on ads. For example, when I lived in Iowa, companies like IMT and Iowa Mutual consistently had lower quotes for minimum coverage compared to the big national companies because they focus on the local area. You should definitely get quotes from those types of places first.

From my experience, the best way to find the cheapest insurance without doing all the work yourself is to visit a local independent insurance agent. They can get quotes from many different companies at once – I remember my agent found me quotes from over a dozen insurers in a single meeting. Plus, they know little tips, like how sometimes adding a cheap renters policy can actually give you a multi-policy discount that saves you more than the renters policy costs.

When I was in a similar tight spot, I looked into credit unions. Sometimes they have partnerships with insurance agencies that can offer better rates to members. It might be worth checking with Veridian or Centris in Iowa to see if they have any such deals, though you should make sure any required membership fees or minimum deposits don’t outweigh the potential savings.

Honestly, when you’re just looking for the bare minimum, you might have to consider companies known for that, like The General. They often advertise very low rates, though keep in mind that your individual quote will still depend on your specific situation, and the coverage will be the absolute minimum required. I’ve heard you can get multiple quotes quickly using sites like PolicyGenius and just pick the lowest one.
