Hey community members, I’m looking into car insurance options and Hugo Insurance keeps popping up with its pay-as-you-go model. The idea of turning my insurance on and off sounds great for my budget, especially since I don’t drive every day. However, I’ve also seen some concerning comments online. Is Hugo Insurance a legitimate and reliable option, or are the potential savings not worth the risk? Has anyone had firsthand experience with them, especially when it comes to claims or dealing with the DMV?

I tried to get an insurance binder from Hugo to register my car, but they told me they are a paperless company. This means if you need physical proof of insurance, you’ll have to log into your online account and print it yourself.

Based on my experience, be really careful if you plan to turn your Hugo insurance off for more than a short period. Even though I only had my insurance off for 11 hours because it lapsed overnight, Hugo still sent a letter to the DMV, and I had to deal with a potential registration suspension.

I actually find Hugo convenient for my budgeting because I only buy insurance for the days I know I’ll be driving to work, which is about 3 days a week. This ends up costing me around $40 for those three days, compared to a higher monthly premium with traditional insurance.

From what I’ve seen, Hugo might be good for just meeting the basic legal requirements, but don’t expect much else. They’re not really known for offering many extra perks or having great customer support.
