I use Lemonade, and so far, my experience with claims has been good. I had a claim for diarrhea processed within a week, and another for a nose injury requiring surgery processed in just two days. Knowing that I paid my premium and got reimbursed quickly for costs like surgery makes the monthly fee feel justified.

I shopped around and found a plan with a higher deductible but a lower monthly premium. For example, I opted for a $500 deductible instead of a $250 one to bring my monthly cost down from $40 to $30. I’m comfortable covering smaller vet visits myself, and the insurance is really for those bigger, unexpected expenses.

Knowing my Golden Retriever puppy is prone to hip dysplasia and other potential issues, I considered that surgeries for these conditions can cost thousands. Even if my insurance has a $200 annual deductible and then covers 90%, that could save me a significant amount if a major issue arises with his breed.

Instead of paying $60 a month for insurance, I put $60 into a separate savings account. Over five years, that would be $3,600. I’m betting that my pet won’t have major medical bills exceeding that amount in that timeframe. If a smaller issue comes up, I have the cash ready, and for a huge emergency, I’d consider other financing options.

For me, the $45 a month I pay for insurance is worth the peace of mind. Knowing that I won’t have to make a decision about my pet’s health based purely on whether I can afford a costly treatment is invaluable. It lets me focus on what’s best for my pet, not just what’s best for my bank account.
