We are getting a Labrador puppy soon and are wondering if pet insurance is a worthwhile investment. Our last Lab lived to 14 and thankfully didn’t have major health issues until the very end. However, with a new puppy, we’re considering being more prepared for unexpected vet bills. For those of you who have pet insurance, especially for Labs or puppies, has it been a good financial decision for you?

I got Spot insurance for my Lab puppy when he was about 6 months old. Shortly after, he ate a leather boot, and the emergency vet bill was around $4500. I submitted the claim, and Spot reimbursed me a few days later without any hassle. For me, having the insurance already paid for itself with this one incident.

I’ve had Healthy Paws for my yellow Lab since he was a puppy, and he’s now 7 years old. While the premiums have increased from around $30 a month to $97 a month over the years, I’ve found it worth it because claim submissions are painless, and I get reimbursed quickly.

I use Trupanion for my lemon Lab, and for his allergies alone, we have over $300 per month in vet bills. Trupanion reimburses us for all but about $30 of that because we met our lifetime deductible when he was only 6 months old. Now, I only pay 10% of his allergy-related costs.

I have Spot for my two huskies, and this month alone, one of them went to the ER twice. What would have been over $10,000 in vet bills, I expect to only pay around $1,500 after reimbursement, considering my deductible and 90% reimbursement plan. For me, the high cost of potential emergencies makes insurance essential.
