I signed up for Lemonade pet insurance for my puppy a year ago because their prices seemed great and their AI claim process sounded super efficient. For the first year, things were smooth, and my claims got resolved quickly. However, once we passed the 12-month mark, they suddenly almost doubled my premiums and started denying every legitimate claim with ridiculous excuses. Now I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this bait-and-switch with Lemonade, where they seem good at first but then turn into a nightmare when you actually need them?

I also had a good initial experience with Lemonade, as they paid for my cat’s ingested foreign body claim of several thousand dollars and approved it within a few days. I was reimbursed the remaining amount of my policy when my cat sadly passed away. So, for me, Lemonade paid out what they owed relatively quickly.

My experience with Lemonade went downhill after a year too. They denied my puppy’s allergy-related claim by saying a previous yeast ear infection during the waiting period was a pre-existing condition, even though my vet clearly stated the ear infection wasn’t allergy-related and there were no allergy mentions in his records. Despite an appeal with a vet’s note, they upheld their denial after a month of waiting. It felt like they were looking for any reason not to pay.

I’m currently on day 34 waiting for Lemonade to process a claim for my dog’s abscessed cyst. The wait times are insanely frustrating. I’ve heard from others that it can take over a month just for the appeals process, and even longer for larger claims to be reviewed. This makes me really worried about what would happen in a real emergency.

Even though my appeals with Lemonade for pre-existing allergy claim denials were eventually successful, it took over a month each time. Despite being one of their “cheapest” options, I’m definitely looking to switch next year because of the hassle and the risk of future denials. It’s not worth the stress, even if the premiums are lower initially.
