One trick I learned to lower my monthly payment when I was really struggling was to max out my deductibles. By agreeing to pay a higher amount out-of-pocket if I had an accident, my monthly premium went down significantly. Just make sure you have some savings to cover that higher deductible if something does happen.

If you won’t be driving much initially while you’re just learning with someone, you might want to look into pay-per-mile insurance like Metromile. I paid as low as $27 a month with them because my base rate was low, and I only paid for the miles I actually drove. This could be a good option if you’re only driving those short trips with your licensed friend.

I saved a ton of money on car insurance by using the Costco insurance program, which goes through American Family Insurance. I was paying almost double with another company before switching, and now I pay under $90 a month for pretty good coverage on my car. If you’re a Costco member, it’s definitely worth getting a quote from them.

If you or a family member has a military background, definitely check out USAA. I’ve been with them for years, and even though some people say their rates aren’t always the absolute lowest, I consistently find them to be very competitive, and their customer service has always been great.

The best advice I can give is to shop around for insurance every 6 to 12 months. I used to stick with the same company for years, but I realized that rates can creep up over time. By getting new quotes regularly from different insurers, I’ve managed to save hundreds of dollars each year.
