Hey everyone, I’m a new pet owner and trying to figure out if pet insurance is a smart move. With monthly premiums and deductibles, it feels like another big expense. For those of you who have it or have decided against it, what has your experience been? I’m looking for honest opinions and would love to hear if you think the cost is justified by the benefits.

I definitely think pet insurance is worth it. Last year, my dog needed emergency surgery for eating something he shouldn’t have, and the bill came out to $3,000. Luckily, my insurance covered 80% after my deductible, so I only ended up paying around $600. Without insurance, that would have been a huge financial hit for me.

I decided against pet insurance and instead put $50 a month into a dedicated savings account for my cat. Over the past five years, I’ve saved up $3,000. My cat has only had a couple of minor issues costing around $300 total, so I’m still well ahead compared to what I would have paid in premiums. For me, self-insuring has been the more financially sound option so far.

I’ve had Lemonade for my puppy for almost two years and have been really happy. I pay about $32 a month and they reimbursed me the same day or the next day for a couple of claims. When my puppy broke her leg, they paid out over $5,000 after my deductible. For that peace of mind for less than $400 a year, it’s been totally worth it.

As a vet tech with over 10 years of experience, I’ve seen so many pet owners regret not having insurance. While premiums can seem like an extra cost, the heartbreak of not being able to afford necessary treatment that could cost thousands of dollars is much worse. I personally use Lemonade and think that finding an affordable plan is crucial – don’t cancel it if you can help it.
