If you decide to try Root, make sure you drive like a grandpa for the first month while they’re “testing” you. Even though I got a 10/10 in one category and 8/10 in another, my rate still went up by $50. It feels like their initial low quote is just to lure you in, and then they use their tracking to find reasons to raise your premium.

I was paying $215 per month for the absolute bare minimum coverage with another company. After turning 26 and having no accidents for five years, I switched back to Geico, and my new insurance is only $87 a month. This makes me wonder if Root’s initial low price is truly competitive in the long run.

Root gave me an initial quote of $300 for full coverage on my new vehicle, which is much better than the $700 per month Geico quoted me. My agent recommended them because they use a driving test to determine the final premium, and I consider myself a good driver who doesn’t use my phone while driving. I’m hoping my rate will even go down after the test.

I used Root for about two years and was paying around $290 for full coverage as a high-risk driver under 25. While the rates were decent for my situation, I’ve heard that their claims service is not good. So, if you’re a very safe driver with a clean record, you might find better and more reliable options elsewhere.

My experience with Root was not great. After a two-week review where we all got driving scores of 9/10 and 10/10, our originally agreed premium went up by $2300. Even though it was still better than our previous insurer, Progressive, it was a significant and unexplained increase.
